Adjusting Truss Rod to Adjust Curvature of the Guitar

The best thing about a great guitarist is the simplicity with which he performs his art. It is almost effortless and the guitar seems to be just an extension of his body. It seems as if he knows the instrument he is playing as well as he knows his limbs. If you know your guitar well, you will know the essentialities of adjusting truss rod.

A good guitar lesson for beginners will put adequate emphasis on describing the structure of the guitar. Is it not handy to know the parts of your bike just in case it broke down in the middle of road? Similarly, it is equally important to have information and knowledge about the instrument that you are trying to master. Being familiar with terms like neck, pickups, amp, truss rod, strum, chord, strings etc. will stand you in good stead as you begin your guitar lessons.

Pickup is a device that converts mechanical vibrations of the strings in to electrical signals. This is useful in adjusting the sound output of an electric guitar. If you know the mechanics involved in working of a pickup, you can very well adjust the output of your guitar to best suit your requirements.

Truss rod is a metallic rod in the neck of a guitar. It allows you to adjust the curvature of the guitar neck. It plays a very important role in fine tuning your guitar. Strings tend to get loose or may tighten up depending on the weather conditions. Increase/decrease in humidity also requires adjusting truss rod.

Truss rod can be accessed through the headstock. Adjustment is done using a hexagonal key. If you turn the key clockwise, truss rod will tighten applying a downward force on the neck. If you turn the key anti-clockwise, it will loosen the truss cord and pull the neck upwards.

Though it looks pretty simple, it is advised that you do not try to adjust the truss rod yourself as there is a risk of breaking the strings or even the neck. In order to get best results, hand over your guitar to a professional.
