Open Question: Does a police car need to have a special license plate?
I know that all marked police cars in my state (Illinois) have special green (some sort of government plates) or special plates with MP (Municipal Police) on them. I also have noticed that all unmarked and undercover police cars (other government such as state secret service also have these distinguishing plates while having no other conspicuous markings). I simply assumed all government/police vehicles had to have these special plates to show they are in fact a police officer and not an impostor, Today however I saw a police car in my town with a normal civilian plate, I would not have known this was a police car until I saw a uniformed officer enter the vehicle and see the strobe lights hidden inside the car.   read more...

Open Question: How to get rid of the shadow when using a white backdrop?
I have been doing photography for a long time but I have always done my photographs outdoors and used natural light. I have purchased some new studio lights and backdrop, etc (no strobe light though)...Whenever I use my white backdrop I have the HARDEST time trying to make it so there is no shadow behind the people. I have tried a few suggestions but it's not working. I appreciate any feedback I can get! Thank you so much!   read more...

I have been spinning records for about 10 years ago, so I have had plenty of time to play with various kinds of DJ lighting. Spinning lights, laser displays, disco balls and they are all familiar to me. I have even used string lights sometimes to create a simple, relaxed ambiance if I am playing downbeat stuff in a chill room. By far the most important component, however, is the strobe light. Without strobe lights, you just can't have a dance party.

Everyone is familiar with strobe lighting to some degree or another, but few people really stop to think about it.  There is more to strobe lighting than meets the eye. People think of dancing as a fun recreational activity, but don't understand the deeper things that are going on in the mind and body when you go dancing. It's not just about enjoying the music and moving your body. There's more to it than that. Music at the right beat and with the right feel puts you into a trance, and strobe lights add to this effect. Your senses go into overdrive, and you can end up oblivious to everything but the music. Having the right flashing lights set to the right frequency can greatly enhance this effect.

Of course, strobe lights are not just useful for dance clubs. You may not have had a chance to think about it, but flashing lights serve all kinds of purposes. Cops don't have the flashing lights just to be annoying and they're meant to intimidate you and get your attention. Even a bright searchlight can be ignored after a while, but flashing lights with intense, ever-changing patterns are extremely difficult to ignore. Strobe lights are also useful for home alarms, car security systems, and a variety of other purposes. Sometimes, a simple flashing light is enough to scare off an otherwise very determined intruder.

Still, my favorite use of strobe lights is in the club. I love to go out dancing, having a good time and hanging out with my friends. Having the right lighting effects really helps me create the perfect atmosphere for a party anytime. Whether it is in a big club or a friend's basement, the addition of a few simple DJ supplies can get everyone to loosen up and have a good time. It is really amazing how responsive the brain is to things like that. It is almost as if we were all biologically programmed to party!
