It will take a long time and a lot of pressure on the pedal to brake, making driving and braking very dangerous.
The best place for getting brakes checked is at a shop that specializes in brakes. Usually such places also perform other regular maintenance and fixes on cars such as oil changes and state inspections. Such common fixes are done all day at these shops. The benefit is that such a shop will have lots of experience working on brakes.
