The profession of the interior design deals with any adjustment plan or decoration of the inner space of the building. The person whose work is related with interior design is known as interior designer. An interior designer works on the furniture, walls, doors, furnishings, lights and textures to enhance the look of a space. The role of an interior designer is to use the elements like lights and furniture etc and then to develop a safe, aesthetically pleasing and functional space for the user of the space.
The major skills of an interior designer lie in the creativity and innovative ideas. To become an interior designer, an individual must have sufficient knowledge regarding architecture, decoration, product design and environmental psychology. The professional interior designers plan the space decoration of almost all types of buildings like hotels, residences, shopping malls, restaurants, theaters and hospitals etc. A talented and skilled interior designer must know the construction codes and the floor plans completely.
The history of the profession of interior design started in 1720. It was originated from the Western Europe and individuals from diverse backgrounds joined this profession during that time. For example, in London the position of the interior designer was filled by the upholsterer while in Paris the merchandisers filled the position of interior designer. At the time of interior designing emergence in Europe and British architects were known as interior designers. For example, Robert Adam is considered as the most famous neoclassical architect. Similarly, William Kent was a painter who was also recognized as a famous interior designer. During the 18th century the most famous interior designers appeared on the screen like Sir William Chambers, Dominique Daguerre and James Wyatt. During this period, the revival of Gothic and Rococo styles in England was brought about by the interior designers. When the profession of the interior design was commercialized then companies started art furnishings.
Interior designing is considered as one of the most significant profession nowadays, therefore, some of the most famous modern interior designers include Lenygon, Morant, Jeanselme and Charles Alaoine .
In the recent years, the interior designers can go for specialization in either residential design or commercial design. The residential interior design includes the decoration of houses. On the other hand, the commercial interior decorations include hospitals, schools and offices. There are various disciplines in interior designing which include computer technology, professional skills, promotional skills, aesthetic disciplines and craft skills etc. Interior designers are very high skilled and innovative people and the popularity of a professional interior designer depends on the creativity of the designer.
