Doing Your Homework on A Franchise

There are many ways to check out a franchise, and most people know that they have to really do their homework before making such a big financial investment. However, there are a few areas of focus which can help you to get all of the information that you need to and to better enable you to make the right choice in what franchise you're looking to buy. Being able to make sure that you are at least very clear on these key things can help you to make a very strong and informed choice about the franchise that you decide to ultimately make your career and what you place your trust in for the long term.
Make sure that you're really abreast on the Uniform Franchise Offering Circular or the Franchisor’s Obligations. Have a very strong look at this aspect and make sure that you are very clear on now only what the franchisor is offering you as a new franchisee up front, but what sort of continued support that they offer and how that will help you to feel like you are really being supported in your franchise. Don't look at this as all the franchise will help you with though, as this is usually not the case- this is generally just the minimum amount of support that they will provide, so it's a good gage of where things can go for you.
Get to know your franchisor's field staff, as well, as they are usually the ones that you will be dealing with in the support capacity. Make sure that you are meeting with the person or team that is assigned to your area as soon as you possibly can and find out what sort of experience they have, what sort of authorities they hold and make sure that you know how many franchisees this person is responsible for, and what level of support that this person is allowed to offer, as well as how much they do give. This is usually your connection to the franchisor itself, so it is always a good idea to get yourself very well acquainted with them and be sure that you are able to get in touch easily.
It is never a really good idea to rely on the outside sales' broker for all the information you want to get on a franchise. However, the best thing you can do is to get ahold of this field staff, or the person in charge of that, as well as speaking to, or even working with a location for a bit to see if you feel that you are in fact a right fit for the franchise. This is one of the ways that many franchisors actually let new or potential franchisees get a feel for the business, so it is something that will likely be a possibility for you. Don't be afraid to check them out and see what the business end of things is really like.
