With the Fairtrade program now expanding in popularity at almost exponential proportions, many people are now asking themselves if it is actually helping them or if it just a marketing gimmick. After all, how can helping poor people in some far flung third world country have an actual direct effect on a modern western society that literally thousands of miles away?

Looking Below the Surface

One area to look at is the number of these far flung third world countries that the country you are a citizen of is militarily involved in. Can it be that economics are playing a part in the unrest that is drawing your country into their conflict? Also, can the problems that seem to persist actually be solved with military intervention?

Valuable Words of Wisdom From People Who Know

If the past can be used as any type of guage the answer to that is no. In fact, people with names like Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter are now saying that there can be no world peace unless the fundamental causes of poverty in these third world countries are first addressed.

People Taking Action Today

Fairtrade is one example where people are not waiting for a government response to these fundamental issues but rather are taking immediate action on their own. You see, the problem in many of these underdeveloped countries isn't that they don't have the seeds of a manufacturing base.

Fairtrade - A Program that is Having an Effect

In fact they do. It's just that the workers themselves aren't receiving a large enough share of the profits that are generated by the manufacturing businesses that do exist. By seeking out and buying products that carry the Fairtrade logo you can be sure that the hard working people at the very bottom, who need it the most, will receive an actual living wage that they can feed and clothe their families with.
