Change Management- What Is It? PDF VersionPrinter Friendly Version

Change Management is a complicated process that implements, follows and monitors all changes in the IT sector under a pre defined model....

Change management is a procedure that enables the changes occurring in a system. These changes are implemented following a well controlled system, or a very well defined and checked model that allows modifications in order to enhance overall performance.

The main goal of change management in the IT sector is to make sure that all necessary procedures and processes are implemented when needed. Also, handling the changes under a defined controlled model, allows the users and managers to minimize potential unfortunate incidents and other problems related to services and functions.

Any change that occurs in the IT sector and infrastructure has a direct impact to the overall function of the system. Sometimes, though, these changes are required due to imposed rules and regulations, the need to follow new rules in order to optimize functionality and operations or to increase effectiveness. Some projects, programs or new initiatives demand these changes, and change management is the only way to do it.

This way standard methods and proven procedures are used in order to ensure an efficient and effective change in the system. Smooth and prompt handling prevents operational problems and hazards, and helps maintain a good balance among the older and newer rules, upon any change or evolution.
Change management is used in specific processes in the IT sector, such as:
Hardware changes
Software changes
Equipment used in communication
Operational Systems
System Software

Procedures associated to maintenance, support and optimization of the live programs and systems.
When it comes to changes, every single one has to be approved and well monitored. The actual process is implemented by management, but the decisions are taken by those who manage the overall system. Risk control and risk management is also involved in all decisions for changes. The basic activities and functions of this type of management can be – roughly – defined as:

- Filtering the overall changes
Managing the possible changes and the process that leads to any result
- Following the procedure and chairing the management projects
- Reviewing and implementing any procedural changes if needed
- Reporting and giving information regarding the management changes.
