There have been several reports about nursing malpractice. The fact is that the number of cases of malpractice has increased. According to The National Council of State Boards of Nursing, registered nurses are being liable for malpractice and negligence because of their errors on medications and documentations and their failure on assessment and intervention.

These days, the demand for nurses is high but the number of nurses is not enough to meet such demand. For this reason, nurses are overloaded with a lot of work so they really need to work overtime and for long hours. Nurses nowadays do not have enough time to rest. As a result, they lack alertness and attentiveness while at work. Consequently, they make mistakes and inflict pain or injury to their patients.

Medical malpractice is what we call the negligence on the part of the doctor and nurses under the normal standard of care. If the patients are harmed in any way, physically or mentally, this is called medical malpractice.

It is also a nursing malpractice if the nurse who takes care of the patient is under qualified for the job. There are some nurses who lack the knowledge and training to properly care for patients. They were not able to finish their nursing education. In this case, nursing malpractice can happen.

Medical malpractice can be avoided. Nurses must take some things into consideration so as not to make any mistakes. They need to double check everything. They need to ensure the following: there is proper and correct documentation, manage treatment immediately, proper medical device is used, report immediately any changes in the patient’s condition, get the patient’s consent, follow the right medical procedure. Nurses should really take a lot of care because the life of the patient is in their hands.
