Open Question: Wouldn't you think this is a GREAT business opportunity?? Is my wife CRAZY? I don't get this...?
So, right now, my wife (age 23) drives almost 60 miles roundtrip to work at a hair salon. She works 2-3 days per week. On a GOOD month, she'll make about $900-1000 for the month (that's including tips!).
So...my father owns a building in our hometown, and his business is on one side of the building, and the other side has been vacant for years. He uses it for storage. I told my wife she should try to open a small studio (just 1, maybe two chairs) and work 2-3 days per week in there. She has a pretty nice sized following of clients in our town already...and with a great location, I think it'd be great. She says I don't know what I'm talking about and it would never work. My dad said she could be in there rent FREE for 6 months! And after that, pay $200 per month. WHERE IS THE RISK??? I told her she could get a $5000 loan to buy her chair, supplies, and remodel the shop to her liking. So...maybe a payment of $150 per month for that?? But it wouldn't take many clients (when she is pocketing 100% of their payment to her!). And what I don't get...is why she is hanging on to her old job like it's something amazing...she is making less than $1000 per month! Give this a shot!
What would you think?
For those who have asked what I do for a living, I'm an insurance agent, and make 95% of the household income.

Open Question: Can You Keep These New Year's Resolutions?
New Year's Resolutions You Can Keep
Are you sick of making the same resolutions year after year that you never
keep? Why not promise to do something you can actually accomplish? Here are
some resolutions that you can use as a starting point:
Gain weight. At least 30 pounds.
Stop exercising. Waste of time.
Read less. Makes you think.
Watch more TV. I've been missing some good stuff.
Procrastinate more. Starting tomorrow.
Spend more time at work.
Stop bringing lunch from home: I should eat out more.
Get in a whole NEW rut!
Personal goal: Bring back disco.
Buy an '83 Eldorado and invest in a really loud stereo system.
Speak in a monotone voice and only use monosyllabic words.
Only wear jeans that are 2 sizes too small and use a chain or rope for a
belt.
Get further in debt.
Break at least one traffic law.
Associate with even worse business clients.
Spread out priorities beyond my ability to keep track of them.
Wait around for opportunity.
Focus on the faults of others.
Mope about my faults.
Never make New Year's resolutions again.
Finally, remember that the nicest thing about the future is that it always
starts tomorrow.

Have
you ever heard the saying that when you cease to dream you stop living?
I came across this quote the other day on a poster in the waiting room
of the dentist office. It really struck a cord with me because I began
to realize that I had stopped dreaming about some of the
accomplishments I wanted to make. I had set aside many of my dreams to
raise my family and to work a job so that I could pay my bills. I was
working in the field that I had my education in, but I was working for
someone else. I had wanted to have my own business and reap the
benefits that come with being the boss. I knew that there extra
headaches and responsibilities that come with being the owner of a
business, but I wanted to try my hand at this.
I came home from
my dentist appoint energized to do this. That night over dinner I told
my husband that I wanted to research small business opportunities. Once
I assured him that I was not high on the gas I had received during my
dental procedure he began to realize that I was serious. He recognized
the dreams that I had placed on hold to parent our children and to work
my present job.
He agreed that I should
look into small business opportunities, but that I should try to keep
us from going into debt. We have been talking about our retirement
years so getting involved in small business opportunities seemed risky
to him. We agreed that I would try to find a small business opportunity
that would have low start up costs and that I could do part-time while
still maintaining my present employment.
I began looking for
small business opportunities that could be done from home over the
internet. Many people warned me that there were many scams out there
and that I should do a lot of research before getting involved with
anything. As I was looking for a small business opportunity I did
encounter several scams that promised huge money with little or no
effort. I knew that it was not going to be this easy or everyone would
be millionaires. I was able to find a company that had a solid
reputation and many support services to get a person started. I signed
on as a dealer and began retailing environmental products. It was
actually easier to do this while I was still working because I could
use my co-workers as a client base. I am now at the point where I have
cut back on my hours at my job and am making good money working my
small business a few hours a week. I sent a note to my dentist thanking
him for hanging the poster in his waiting area. I explained how it had
opened a whole new world for me.
