The Many Different Ways to Work with Acrylic Sheets

We can use acrylic sheets in many things but we can use ideally in window and rack making. This work should be done with great deal of care, with the outline penciled in; then cut the acrylic sheet to shape. If rotary tool is not used on acrylic, you may want to test it on a remote section of the acrylic sheet before you tackle the real thing. Adjust the speed settings of variable speed cutter and see which speed is ideal for cutting through the acrylic.

Add a couple layers of masking tape on the inside of the penciled outline as an added protection against scratching and mistakes. If sudden jerky movement is there from the tool, the masking tape can prevent a scratch from marking the acrylic. Always work outdoors while cutting this sheet, since cutting the plastic will emit an odor. Try to cut along the outline slowly and evenly. And if the acrylic is melting, slow down or stop cutting to allow the area to cool down. Be slow and steady while working with acrylic sheets.

Later the acrylic sheet is cut to size; place it against the panel to see if all edges are covering your penciled outline. When everything matches up correctly, you can proceed to cutting the metal case. Be invariably cautious and utilize all safety equipment before you make any cuts. Always change the cut-off wheel if it is an unusable size at this time. Hide off the area outside of the outline you drew on the side panel with two layers of masking tape. It will prevent any scratches that may occur if you stray from the cutting area. Afterwards you will not be using the portion inside the panel and nobody will see it, you don’t need to cover that with masking tape. Do keep in mind that the metal is a lot harder than the acrylic, so adjust your rotary tool if necessary to compensate.

Turn off the gloves on and remove the cut-off wheel from your rotary tool and be careful not to run your fingers across any rough edges; it may cut the skin. Then attach a grinding or sanding attachment and run it back and forth over the edges to remove any sharp edges. Acrylic sheets are light in weight and shatter resistant compared to glass, making it popular for framing. It is best choice for large pictures and to satisfy safety considerations. As it has light weight it reduces transportation and shipping charges, while its shatter resistance improves safety. The possibility of shards damaging the material to be framed is also minimized.
