Resolved Question: Is the "Rule of Thumb" just more Ms Information?
This writer believes that the "Rule of Thumb" is just one example of feminist mythology and falsehoods, which are harder to kill than vampires: http://www.aei.org/article/100695 What do you think? Mind boggling quote: Feminist Berkeley law professor Nancy K. D. Lemon's "Domestic Violence Law is organized as a conventional law-school casebook--a collection of judicial opinions, statutes, and articles selected, edited, and commented upon by the author. The first selection, written by Cheryl Ward Smith (no institutional affiliation is given), offers students a historical perspective on domestic-violence law. According to Ward: "The history of women's abuse began over 2,700 years ago in the year 753 BC. It was during the reign of Romulus of Rome that wife abuse was accepted and condoned under the Laws of Chastisement. . . . The laws permitted a man to beat his wife with a rod or switch so long as its circumference was no greater than the girth of the base of the man's right thumb. The law became commonly know as 'The Rule of Thumb.' These laws established a tradition which was perpetuated in English Common Law in most of Europe." Where to begin? How about with the fact that Romulus of Rome never existed. He is a figure in Roman mythology--the son of Mars, nursed by a wolf. Problem 2: The phrase "rule of thumb" did not originate with any law about wife beating, nor has anyone ever been able to locate any such law. It is now widely regarded as a myth, even among feminist professors. A few pages later, in a selection by Joan Zorza, a domestic-violence expert, students read, "The March of Dimes found that women battered during pregnancy have more than twice the rate of miscarriages and give birth to more babies with more defects than women who may suffer from any immunizable illness or disease." Not true. When I recently read Zorza's assertion to Richard P. Leavitt, director of science information at the March of Dimes, he replied, "That is a total error on the part of the author. There was no such study." The myth started in the early 1990s, he explained, and resurfaces every few years. Zorza also informs readers that "between 20 and 35 percent of women seeking medical care in emergency rooms in America are there because of domestic violence." Studies by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Bureau of Justice Statistics, an agency of the U.S. Department of Justice, indicate that the figure is closer to 1 percent. Few students would guess that the Lemon book is anything less than reliable. The University of California at Berkeley's online faculty profile of Lemon hails it as the "premiere" text of the genre. It is part of a leading casebook series, published by Thomson/West, whose board of academic advisers, prominently listed next to the title page, includes many eminent law professors. I mentioned these problems in my message to Lemon. She replied: "I have looked into your assertions and requested documentation from Joan Zorza regarding the March of Dimes study and the statistics on battered women in emergency rooms. She provided both of these promptly." If that's the case, Zorza and Lemon might share their documentation with Leavitt, of the March of Dimes, who is emphatic that it does not exist. They might also contact the Centers for Disease Control statistician Janey Hsiao, who wrote to me that "among ED [Emergency Department] visits made by females, the percent of having physical abuse by spouse or partner is 0.02 percent in 2003 and 0.01 percent in 2005." Here is what Lemon says about Cheryl Ward Smith's essay on Romulus and the rule of thumb: "I made a few minor editorial changes in the Smith piece so that it is more accurate. However, overall it appeared to be correct." A few minor editorial changes? Students deserve better. So do women victimized by violence. Feminist misinformation is pervasive. In their eye-opening book, Professing Feminism: Education and Indoctrination in Women's Studies (Lexington Books, 2003), the professors Daphne Patai and Noretta Koertge describe the "sea of propaganda" that overwhelms the contemporary feminist classroom. The formidable Christine Rosen (formerly Stolba), in her 2002 report on the five leading women's-studies textbooks, found them rife with falsehoods, half-truths, and "deliberately misleading sisterly sophistries." Are there serious scholars in women's studies? Yes, of course. Sarah Blaffer Hrdy, an anthropologist at the University of California at Davis; Janet Zollinger Giele, a sociologist at Brandeis; and Anne Mellor, a literary scholar at UCLA, to name just three, are models of academic excellence and integrity. But they are the exception. Lemon's book typifies the departmental mind-set." Great answers. Thanks.   read more...

Resolved Question: I just read that Michael Jackson was poisoned by an employee. How can I confirm this story?
News flash! Murder plot involving Michael Jackson? By John McMahon I wanted to uncover the truth in this crazy rumor following today’s news. Michael Jackson dying was shock enough. When a celebrity as big as Michael Jackson dies, the world stands still for a moment. Now there is this wild story circling the internet and I have done my part to investigate: A malicious internet rumor regarding the untimely and shocking death of “the King of Pop” and music icon Michael Jackson was being spread on several gossip websites including those of the National Enquirer and People magazine. The story stated that: Michael Jackson was murdered! There was a claim that a former employee had an anonymous tip about an “inside job” similar to the suspicious death of David Carradine. This story is about as absurd as telling me that Farrah Fawcett was murdered! Ridiculous. We were trying to find out where this rumor started about the toxic poisoning of superstar Michael Jackson. An inside source that wishes to remain anonymous has told us that a former employee, who is now working as a publicity director for a popular and famous Los Angeles based escort agency called “Diamond Companions. I spoke with a young lady named Jaycee Collins over at www.diamond-companions.com to try to confirm any of this and initially, they gave me the run around. I was put on hold for twenty minutes and then transferred to a voicemail, which was full. I have tried to see if this “unknown source” was any type of escort but I seriously doubt that Michael Jackson was calling an escort agency. I was then told by my contact that this was not the case and that the person who spread this rumor was only an assistant to one of the private nurses hired by Michael Jackson in the past few months during his recent medical problems. He had been seeing a private doctor as late as yesterday. So, after doing a bit more snooping around, I was able to talk to another employee at a sister company called “Candy Companions” based in Las Vegas. They also had heard the rumors and allegations about a poisoning death by one of those close to Michael Jackson. I asked where this rumor came from and I was told by Jayden Pierson, a budding porn star in Los Angeles that also does some part time work with Diamond Companions and Candy Companions or www.Candycompanions.com that apparently she was not supposed to address any media inquiries or talk to any news reporters from CNN or the Los Angeles times, which had already reported Michael Jackson’s death as: “Michael Jackson dies of heart failure.” It took several hours to go from unconfirmed death, to a coma, and finally to “Jacko dies of heart attack.” We tracked down a former bodyguard of Michael Jackson that also worked for his father and he also said he had heard these rumors of foul play in the shocking events of the death of Michael Jackson. Again, I was stone-walled by the management and public relations of this bodyguard agency. The former bodyguards, who are currently employed by Celebrity Bodyguard Services in Beverly Hills, California asked to remain anonymous and “off the record” but I was able to confirm beyond a doubt that they did hear through this same unidentified source, about a conspiracy in the death of Michael Jackson today. I went directly to the website: www.celebritybodyguardservices.com and I found out that this former bodyguard of Michael Jackson was also linked to being the bodyguard for the infamous Phil Spector. We all know that Phil Spector was recently convicted of murder in the death of actress Lana Clarkson. So I wanted to know how these people from Celebrity Bodyguard Services and Diamond Companions or Candy Companions have any link or knowledge to this unlikely story of Michael Jackson’s death being a drug overdose, or a lethal injection of a drug to induce a heart attack or some crazy conspiracy about murdering Michael Jackson. The owner of Celebrity Bodyguard Services in Los Angeles, Chris Clark told me this: “we are completely unaware of any story of a conspiracy or murder plot in the death of Michael Jackson. I wish the family and friends of Michael Jackson my condolences and I pray that Michael Jackson may rest in peace. Other than this, I have no knowledge of this story and I deny knowing any person or source or link or knowledge of any so called: former employees of my bodyguard agency or anyone else having any information on the death of Michael Jackson. I only know what I have heard on CNN and the local news in L.A. and I believe that Michael Jackson died of natural causes.” So, I am like the rest of you out here in the gossip and media world. I can’t find any actual source to confirm this but I’m sure there will be an autopsy and toxicology report in Michael Jackson’s death as well as an investigation by the Los Angeles county coroner’s office to determine the cause of death involving the music legend. Michael, you will be missed by billions ar   read more...
