Years ago trying to get auto insurance quotes could take days if not weeks of your time. Between making phone calls, waiting for call backs, playing phone tag, and then finding out some of the companies weren't even ones you wanted to do business with, it's no wonder that auto insurance comparison tools needed a major overhaul.

With the dawn of the internet, this particular chore was made so much easier. And as years go by it is virtually the only way to do a comprehensive job of due diligence and price comparison.

One thing to be careful of, however, when you are asking for quotes from multiple companies is to make sure you are getting quotes for the exact same coverage with each company. Not all websites are the same, and not all policies provide the same limits.

Even though each state has its own mandatory insurance coverages, including making insurance an option altogether, each insurance company doing business in the state has a right to offer higher limits, additional services, and bundled pricing. For instance, you might know that the minimum PIP in your state is $10, 000 per accident, but the insurance companies have the right to offer higher limits such as $30, 000 per accident. When you click on "minimum" on a website, make sure you know if it's their minimum, or the state's.

You might want to try getting quotes from an online company that only offers quotes - a broker type service - but they don't sell insurance themselves. They frequently have an option where, after you select the policy and companies you are interested in, you can compare each one. This will give you a good idea of whether you are comparing apples to apples.

Print out the pages with the information you need to keep in order to make a final decision. Call these companies to talk to a real person before making a decision.
