Different causes for Cerebral Palsy PDF VersionPrinter Friendly Version

The basic answer to exactly what causes a child to be born with Cerebral Palsy is a simple, basic answer;damage. The specific reason behind this brain damage can result in many different answers, answers which are sometimes hard to pinpoint. To find out the specific reason for a child suffering from this disorder, a doctor would need to do a complete an in depth review of the patient's health history. There are multiple tests and procedures that can be performed to find out reasons behind the cause as well.
This damage is brought about during any stage of the brains development; before, during or after birth. Unfortunately, there are many times that the exact cause is not found, regardless of the amount of tests or health history that is provided.
One of the causes of Cerebral Palsy can be developmental malformations. This basically means that at some point in time, something interrupted the brains typical development course. This malformation can cause a child's brain to not develop the typical number of brain cells or can cause a breakdown in communication between the brains cells. It can also cause brain cells to drift apart in the brain which cause damage.
Often times developmental malformations are brought about due to genetic disorders. Developmental malformations specifically found in the part of the brain that manage voluntary movement are found to directly result in a child getting this disorder.
If malformation is found to have not been the cause, neurological damage is looked at. Neurological damage is the direct result of a brain injury occurring at sometime throughout the pregnancy. These brain injuries can usually be directly linked to a specific incident. These incidents can range greatly. Difficult deliveries can result in brain damage, as well as premature births. Any sort of complications during the pregnancy can result in Cerebral Palsy.
Alcohol and drug use has been directly linked, since this has a severe effect on a developing fetus's brain. A fetus not getting a proper amount of oxygen at any point throughout a newborns delivery, birth or time in the womb can also be linked as a cause. Lack of oxygen during delivery is an unforeseen threat and can be caused by many different factors during labor.
Another frequent cause is the child suffering from an infection of some kind. Jaundice and bacterial meningitis are both common infections that new born babies are threatened by.
A child being born with this disease is at times unavoidable, a freak accident such as a fall is something that can cause a fetus life long damage.
On average 10 to 20 percent of children that have this disease, were effected with it after birth. This leaves the majority of cases to have been caused by an incident that occurred during birth or at some point during the pregnancy.
Coming to terms and gaining an understanding of why your child suffers from this disease is often times something that many parents wish to pinpoint. This need for pinpointing can help in a parents ability to come to terms with the disease.
