The immune system is the system that looks after an organism, in this case our human body, from invasion by bacteria, viruses, parasites, germs, toxins and all types of pathogen microorganisms.

Our immune system helps us to stay healthy by avoiding disease to spread in our body. Put simply, our immune system allows us to stay alive. The minute the immune system is overloaded or stop working properly, we get sick and can even die.
For many germs, the human body is an ideal ground and they certainly would like to get inside and attack the body. It is the immune system job to keep these germs out. But if they succeed in getting in, it is also the immune system job to look for and destroy the invaders.

The skin is the first obstacle these invaders encounter, which offers an excellent protection for the body. The skin is difficult to go through and produces an array of substances that are hazardous to the germs. Holes like the eyes, the nose and the mouth, which appear less difficult to invade possess some defence too. They are protected by fluids that can arrest mean invaders.

Obviously, immune systems are constantly busy and searching for pathogens that are trying to harm our body. It's a difficult task because the first thing the immune system has to do is to distinguish and remember millions of various enemies.

Secondly, it has to make the right defence like secretions and cells to match up with and wipe out each enemy. This is done with the assistance of a complex communication network. Millions of organized cells get together and exchange information back and forth. As soon as the immune cells receive the alert, they begin producing powerful chemicals. But the fantastic ability to distinguish the body' s own cells and the foreign cells is the key to a healthy immune system.

This is critical because without this aptitude the immune system will not have a clue of which organisms to assault or not. This is done with the assistance of "marker molecules". When the immune system defenders meet organisms carrying markers that say "foreign", they instantly start an attack. The faster the response the better they can eliminate the germs.
