Information on the updates that have taken place in the field of erectile dysfunction. No the medical options available for treatments....

Vast improvements have been made in recent years involving the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men- be that following prostate surgeries and treatments or just in general. There is now, more than ever more options out there for men who are looking to continue their sex lives normally following surgeries and more options are being found all the time. Seeking out treatment for prostate related issues no longer means what it once did, and many men find their lifestyles are not as impacted by it as they feared.

The current range of treatments is fairly diverse, offering men the option of oral medication, injections or suppositories, vacuum devices and prosthetics. However, pharmaceutical companies continue to research erectile dysfunction and what can be done about it. Let's first have a look at the current oral medications a little more in depth.

Tadalafil (Cialis): Tadalafil is an orally administered medication for erectile dysfunction known for having a 36 hour effectiveness- meaning, you can take it on a Friday morning and by Saturday night it should still work. A PDE5 inhibitor, Tadalafil works as an 'as needed' medication.

Vardenafil (Levitra): Another PDe5 inhibitor, Vardenafil is also an 'as needed' medication but should not be taken more than once a day and should be taken an hour prior to sexual activity. This medication will not give you an erection, bare in mind- it increases the blood flow to the penis, so that stimulation is effective.

Sildenafil (Viagra): Currently the most popular option on the market, Sildenafil was initially studied for angina pectoris and hypertension. However, during the course of the study it was observed to induce marked penile erections. It does so by utilizing the release of nitric oxide (NO) in the corpus cavernosum of the penis.

Now, the newer options that are on the table offer a wider variety of options to patients and as of yet, are not approved by soon will be.

Gene Therapy: This option may take a bit longer than others to reach the market, but in animal studies, replacement of proteins or products that are not working properly in men with ED has shown quite alot of success.

Avanafil: Similar to current oral medications, this one would work in much the same way, but could be taken multiple times a day for those who would like to have intercourse more than once a day. It is a phosphodiesterase inhibitor that is showing quite alot of promise in clinical studies.

Topiglan: Rather than be injected, as it is currently offered in alprostadil injection therapy, this is a topical ointment. This is however still under investigation, but would certainly provide a less daunting form of treatment.

Uprima: Currently marketed in Europe, this option is an under the tongue dissolving medication that involves stimulating dopamine in the brain. Clinical studies are still underway in the US, as a few people passed out during the studies and current studies involve a nasal administration of the drug.
