If you use artificial lighting it makes it possible to grow houseplants just about anywhere you want. A lot of people like myself start with a few houseplants and then it turns into a bunch of houseplants. You eventually run out of room in your window. This is where lighting would come in. Even a table lamp with a 75 watt bulb will do wonders for your houseplant.

The most common and practical artificial illumination for gardeners who want to start indoor is fluorescent tube lighting. If your wanting to start your vegetables or your flower plants inside at the end of winter, artificial lighting is great for this too. Some vegetables will grow to maturity in the winter using artificial lighting. Some of these include lettuce, radishes, and compact tomatoes. Fluorescent lights are good to have if your stating plants or veggies. They don't have to be expensive either. I got lucky with mine. They were in my house when I moved in. When my husband started remodeling the house we took them down to hang new lighting and then I had lights for my plants. I also see them all the time in the newspaper and at yard sales and second hand stores.

If your growing under fluorescent lights you need to make sure your plant has good air circulation, enough moisture in the air and soil, the right amount of nutrients and that you keep it at the right temperature.
The lights need to be turned on for 14 to 16 hours a day to emulate the sun and simulate growth. If you want you can attach a timer to the fixtures to make the lights turn on and off by there selves. So if you find yourself running out of room in your windows and you want more plants then artificial lighting isdefinitely something to think about.
