Tips to Start A Vegetable Garden at Home

Do you want to learn how to quickly plant a vegetable garden at home the right way? Planting a healthy vegetable garden isn't difficult but you must be careful to avoid common mistakes that many vegetable gardening beginners make.
Having a vegetable garden at home that can be harvested daily for you and your family is one of the most rewards things you can do. Not only will you have fresh produce daily but it will also save thousands of dollar off your yearly grocery bill.
If you are anything like me you would know there is nothing quite like fresh picked food from the garden. Unfortunately it's almost impossible today to buy totally fresh and organic produce anywhere. Those that do sell it charge an arm and a leg and those who don't offer vegetables that don't resemble the food that I had when I was growing up.
No matter how much space you have to plant a vegetable garden you will be surprised at just how much vegetables you can grow even in a limited space. First decide on your plot, the area for your garden. It's important that you pick an area that will receive plenty of morning sun which is ideal sunlight for vegetables.
Try and find a spot away from trees and plants as these can take away vital nutrients away from your vegetables, the last thing that you want.
Before you go out and purchase seeds or seedlings you need to prepare you soil, this is the most critical component and also the one that is overlooked the most by beginners. You should turn your soil over, dig in about 1 foot and turn the soil over. Soil is the life line for your vegetables so it must be in the ideal condition before planting can commence.
Ideally your soil should have a pH level of 6.5. Don't stress too much if it's off the mark, some garden lime can quickly bring your soil pH levels to where they should be. If you do not have a test kit at home, take your soil to your local gardening outlet for testing, pick 4 soil samples from different spots in your plot.
It's important that you pick vegetables that you can rotate seasonally to ensure that your garden is able to produce fresh vegetables year around. This will depend on your climate so check with your local gardening outlet for the best suited vegetables for your area.
Rotating vegetables is very important as this will help eliminate pests and bugs.
Pick your vegetables and wait for 4-5 weeks before you begin planting. This will allow your soil to settle as well for it to reach optimal pH level. Whether you decide on seeds or seedlings they are extremely affordable.
Providing the right nutrients for your vegetables is imperative. Get your hands on some organic fertilisers such as manure, blood and bones and other compost to provide your garden the healthy start it deserves.
Vegetables love water but many people tend to over water them which can then lead to gardens becoming water logged, you don't want to go too crazy on the water. Make sure there is sufficient drainage for excess water to avoid this problem.
