Refreshing Existing Kitchen Cabinets

Is your kitchen in need of refurbishment? Do you cringe at the sight of your old kitchen cabinets with peeling paint; but cannot afford new ones? A simple solution to this problem is to refinish your existing cupboards. Refinishing is the process of removing the old paint, and then putting on a new coat. The old paint is removed either by using sand paper or by chemically stripping it off. Be sure to read and adhere to all instructions included with the chemical remover.
Before starting off you need to determine what material was used in making your kitchen cabinets. If the cabinets are made of metal you just need to repaint them. In case there is any damage that was caused by corrosion, the damaged area simply needs to be cleaned out. Once it is smooth apply a coat of rust proof primer. While selecting the paint and the primer, keep in mind that both of them should be compatible with the metal of your kitchen cabinet.
For wooden cabinets, first of all remove all of the hardware. Using a degreaser, thoroughly clean all parts of the doors and frames. Smooth out the surface that is to be painted using sand paper. Once the cabinet is smoothed and free of any dust particles, start applying a bonding agent; making sure to carefully read all the instructions that are provided by the kitchen cabinet manufacturers. Then and only then, apply a coat of fresh paint followed by a coat of varnish. The varnish and paint generally have to be applied within a given time limit, so make sure you do that. Dry the freshly painted cabinets in a dust free area. After a thorough drying, carefully reassemble the newly painted parts. It is usually advisable to use fresh hardware. Once through, marvel at your spanking new kitchen cabinets.
