Things to Remember when Moving Home PDF VersionPrinter Friendly Version

Moving home is stressful enough without all the little extras you have to remember - but they are important, such as letting your bill providers know you are moving and preparing as well as possible for the move....

When you're getting ready to move house, you're probably mainly focussed on what you're going towards, not what you're leaving behind. However, it's essential that you do take care to remember everything you're leaving, because if you don't you could end up with a lot of stress and hassle on your hands.

There are so many things you need to remember that making a list can really help. For example, you'll need to let people like your doctor and dentist know of your change of address. This stretches out to other companies that may get in touch with you through the mail, such as your credit card company, insurance companies, your children's schools and your bank or building society.

It could be the case that you're better off switching doctors - which is a requirement if you move out of your current doctor's catchment area. Changing to a nearby facility is more convenient and brings you peace of mind that, should an emergency occur, you won't experience difficulty in getting to where you need to be.

Moving house consists of a lot of areas, such as packing up possessions and furniture and getting them to the right place. While you're making arrangements for furniture, be aware that your fridge and freezer - if you're taking them - should be defrosted around two days before the move so you don't damage them with excess water.

You should also pack according to necessity, with the things you need the most taking priority in the boxes that will be first to arrive at your new house. This should include important items like keys, money and cards, valuables and things you'll need to make your first night in your new home comfortable - not to mention that celebratory bottle of champagne - just make sure you pack the glasses too! Also include items like bathroom accessories and snacks so you won't go hungry while waiting to do your first proper food shop in your new home.

Creating lists is a convenient way by which to ensure you're getting everything done that you need to. You can prioritise and really reduce the stress that arises in the moving experience, from making sure you pack your toothbrushes in an easy to access location to sorting out your electricity suppliers on arrival.

And, thanks to your new organisational skills, you'll spend less time worrying and more time enjoying your new home.
