70 Weeks of Daniel 9 - An Overview PDF VersionPrinter Friendly Version

Many apply the 70 weeks of Daniel literally. But Jesus himself applied them symbolically. These prophecies start at the rebuilding of Jerusalem and extend to the coming of the Messiah....

The 70 Weeks of Daniel A General Overview

The 70 week prophecy does not refer to 70 literal weeks. But symbolic weeks that extend to the coming of the Messiah Prince.

In chapter 9 of the Book of Daniel, the prophel is praying about what will God do with his people. Will God fulfill the prophecies of Jeremiah that said "Jer 29:10 For thus saith the LORD, That after seventy years be accomplished at Babylon I will visit you, and perform my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place. ".

But even though God was going to fulfill this prophecy, God directed the mind of Daniel towards a most important prophecy: the coming of the Messiah and the Probationary time of the Jewish Nation as a people.

Daniel was worried more about the present but God wanted to show Daniel something more important.
So he sent an angel to give him this prophecy about the 70 weeks.

Daniel 9:24: "Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.

A few things happen during the Seventy Weeks:
1) Probation "upon thy people and thy holy city". This was the last chance as a nation God was giving to the Jewish Nation.
2) "finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness. This all reffering to one act. The Act of Christ dying for our sins. Through His death he would end sin in our lives and give us His righteousness".

Here are the texts in the New Testament that show that this was fulfilled:
a) "Finish Transgression":1Co 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
b) "Make reconciliation for iniquity": 2Co 5:18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
c)"Bring in everlasting righteousness: Rom 5:21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

3) Anoint the most Holy. The earthly Sanctuary and its ceremonies would not be valid anymore because the Real Sanctuary in Heaven would be anointed.

Here is what Paul says in the book of Hebrews:

Heb 8:1 Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens;
Heb 8:2 A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.

This is an overview of what the angel said(I'm using a modern version so you will understand better)

Dan 9:25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks( seven weeks and another sixty-two weeks):

So the angel of God is giving Daniel a prophecy that would show when the Messiah Prince would come. And also tells Daniel when the Prophecy will start. It starts with the rebuilding of Jerusalem. This rebuilding of Jerusalem took place in the year 457.

Here at the moment the angel talks about the first 69 weeks of the 70 weeks. What happens during this time:
1) Jerusalem is rebuilt because the Babylonians had destroyed it many years past.
2) Messiah Prince shall come.

So the prophecy starts from the rebuild of Jerusalem and extends to the Messiah Prince.

Christ confirmed this clearly by saying:
1) Mar 1:15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

What "time" was he talking about? The 69 weeks.

2) Jesus clearly taught that this part of the prophecy of Daniel would be fullfilled:

Mat 24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)

This is basically the an overview. Much can be said about this prophecy and I will continue to write upon it.
