The Most Common Health Problems for Older Dogs
Depending on the breed, size and other key factors, dogs will develop different illnesses. Some of the most frequent illnesses are:
- Bone and joint issues
- General reduction in the metabolism
- Difficulty with ears and eyes
- Kidney dysfunctions
- Liver dysfunctions
- Skin gets thin and the coat is patchy
- Teeth and gums issues
The older dogs also lose their energy and focus. They do not have the vitality to go around chasing cats or their owner all the time, like a puppy. They may develop arthritis or some kind of inflammatory disease. They may also hate to climb stars.
Only the veterinarian can suggest methods to reduce all the discomfort due to arthritis. Older dogs also develop cataracts and sometimes glaucoma. When the eyes develop a cloudy appearance and they reflect the light, it means they developed cataract. Glaucoma is also usual disease that increases the problems and it is serious, if you leave it untreated.
The circulatory system is also affected and so are the kidneys, heart, lungs, liver or the brain. As the dog gets older he is also susceptible to infection because the immune system is less strong. As its owner, you are the one responsible of helping the dog to deal with these problems.
The Ways for Overcoming the Health Problems
The only way to do that is by making the dog more comfortable. Pay attention to its needs and do not force it to do things it does not want to do.
Brush the coat gently and be extra patient. Make sure you clean its teeth regularly and also a good diet. You need to talk to the veterinarian about finding the best way to feed your dog.
Quality food is not expensive and it is the best way to keep your older dog happy.
By doing all these things you are able to increase its life to 12 or more years. It is all up to you. Taking care of your dog in the right way is the crucial thing in assuring it a long and happy life.
